An Ongoing Story

Over the entire earth, the great sun shines—
An effortless appearance: Who summoned it?
Just so, all beings benefit
From the shapes I take spontaneously.
—Gesar of Ling

We live in dark and difficult times, when the powers that human beings have mastered through the centuries are placed at the service of the ego. Without understanding the dynamic that drives us, we find ourselves hurtling toward frustration and a widening sense of futility.

In such times, the epic of the great king Gesar takes on deeper significance. Leader of his people, crafty foe, stalwart fighter against evil, Gesar is no ordinary hero. His efforts aim at the wellbeing of all, and his heart is made strong and loving by his courageous resolve to lead all beings to complete and perfect enlightenment. Symbolically, Gesar can be the leader whose fearless activity in these troubled times helps establish the Dharma in this new land.

Gesar Magazine is named for this great Bodhisattva, whose deeds have inspired generations of Tibetans to expand their vision and accomplish the impossible. Here we explore the many facets of the Dharma and report on the efforts of the Nyingma community, under the guidance of its founding Lama Tarthang Tulku, to counter the unconscious drive toward suffering at the root of all samsaric activity. We present both traditional and contemporary teachings, as well as news of our activities—building a bridge between our own era and timeless wisdom and compassion.

The editors of Gesar invite readers to contribute their views and insights. Please contact us at Gesar Magazine, 2018 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, or by email:
